Adobe Unveils AI-Powered Tools at MAX 2024 Conference
Adobe Adds New AI Skills to Illustrator and Photoshop
Photoleap stands out for its simplicity and mobility, offering professional editing capabilities in the palm of your hand. Adobe’s latest Firefly Vector model powers new Illustrator features like Generative Shape Fill, which allows users to add detailed vectors to shapes via descriptive text prompts. Adobe is upgrading those existing capabilities to a new AI model called the Firefly Image 3 Model.
Adjust the brush size so it’s slightly larger than the blemish you want to remove. You can adjust the brush size, hardness, and spacing by opening the brush options at the top. However, the easiest way to change the size of your brush is by using the “[” and “]” keys on your keyboard. This is great for touching up portraits or cleaning up any unwanted spots in your images. With your image selected, click the half-filled circle icon at the bottom of your Layers panel and choose Brightness/Contrast from the menu.

It’s very simple and utilizes the layer function most people already use in Photoshop. It wouldn’t be my go-to animation tool, but using Photoshop’s timeline has come in handy in the past. Pixelmator Pro’s Mac-based development makes it feel like a native Apple tool with a sleek and minimalist interface. Its default navigation is flipped compared to Photoshop’s, but it’s not difficult to navigate. Photoshop has long been available for desktop use across a variety of operating systems, namely Windows and Mac, with some workarounds to access it on Linux.
Firstly is Photoshop Elements on the Web—this works similarly to Adobe Express or Photoshop on the Web—available from your browser. This allows you to access the tool when away from your home computer if you log in and have internet connectivity. The Object Removal Brush, as well as the Removal Brush, use Adobe Firefly’s AI technology and work similarly to Photoshop’s Generative Fill tool.
And gets the images right most of the time
While I’m not adverse to a snarky comment when one is due I feel in this instance you were rather harsh. I get the feeling the comment may have been driven by ignorance of the problem when it comes to colour matching in composite images. Older methods such as those using helper layers are both time consuming and pretty tedious and it’s not all about making ‘fake’ anything it’s about creating original artwork or images.
The Illustrator AI Mockup tool does it all for you, and you just have to drag your design into the shot. Previous to the introduction of Intertwine, you’d have to use multiple layers, finickety erase tools, and deal with the horror of there being no way to backtrack if you make a mistake. Intertwine makes all of that quick and easy with a little AI genius. Photoshop’s Select Subject and Object Selection tools aren’t obvious AI features, but they use Adobe Sensei AI technology and is one of the most helpful AI tools you can find—and that you’ll actually use often.
Extensive tutorials, online courses, and community support facilitate learning. Labrecque has authored a number of books and video course publications on design and development technologies, tools, and concepts through publishers which include LinkedIn Learning (Lynda.com), Peachpit Press, and Adobe. He has spoken at large design and technology conferences such as Adobe MAX and for a variety of smaller creative communities.
To use the tool, you’ll need a subscription that includes Photoshop, like one of Adobe’s photography plans. The AI is also too data-heavy to run on the device, so you’ll also need an internet connection. Quick Actions in Lightroom for mobile and web claims to speed up your edits by automatically creating masks based on the subject matter of your photo. Quick Actions will then suggest contextual edits and relevant tools, so it suits editing on-the-go or any time you need to make precise edits away from your computer. Photoshop has had Generative Fill and Generative Expand features, but it could not create images from scratch from text prompts. That is changing today, as the latest Photoshop beta comes with a new Generate Image feature that, thanks to AI, allows for text-to-image generation.
Photoshop is very compatible with other Adobe tools, allowing you to integrate files from other Adobe software into your Photoshop documents — and vice versa with various Adobe tools. This keeps it compatible with the Adobe and Creative Cloud ecosystems. Photoshop as a software isn’t very compatible with non-Adobe tools, though. The very thing that made Pixelmator a charming and affordable image editor could go away once Apple officially acquires the company.
Dubbed generative extend, the tool uses AI to add both video and sound to the end of an existing clip. In demonstrations of the tool, Adobe showed off generated video that looked very similar to the original clip. While there is no set timeline for Generative Workspace to be implemented publicly into Adobe Photoshop or other Adobe programs, you can explore it in Photoshop Beta. If you’re someone who uses a lot of AI imagery in your work, this tool is set to be your new favorite Adobe feature.
In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making. GPU-accelerated, AI-powered video retiming tool can now be used without a host app, for under half the price of a regular plugin license. Promising Unreal Engine 5 world building toolset gets new options for creating terrain and layering effects.
Blue Hour Photography and Night Photography Are Not the Same
Historically, it offered a 30-day free trial, and in 2024 Affinity began offering a 90-day free trial for all its software before purchase, although it’s not obvious how long Affinity will continue to offer this. Pixelmator Pro became publicly available in 2017 as a Mac-focused image-editing and manipulation tool. If you want to improve your productivity and work more efficiently, Alfred is simply unmatched for Mac users. Guideline violations are still frequent when there is nothing in the image that seems to have the slightest possibility of being against the guidelines. In those cases, the violations could be triggered due to issues with the prompt.
This AI-based technology modifies the lighting and color on the subject to match that of the background to which the subject has been added. Harmonize even creates shadows on the background in places where they would appear had the subject been photographed on-site. As seen in the demo video, the results are striking, and it is difficult to tell which people were originally present in a scene and which ones were added in post-production. Especially noteworthy is how the technology accounts for the position of the light source in the original image. If that light source would have created a lens flare, then a lens flare is added to the image.
The first new feature in Illustrator, Objects on Path, makes it easier to move objects to specific locations within an image. That task can involve a significant amount of work in some cases, such as when a designer wishes to place a large number of objects at exactly the same distance from one another. If you’re a photographer, your initial reaction to all this may have been understandable confusion.
Photoshop Elements includes a handful of AI tools, but not as many as the main version of the software. You can edit photos by using filters and effects, quick touch-ups, collages, resizing and recomposing images and elements, and adding text. It is now easier than ever to do common tasks like removing unwanted objects from an image in Photoshop. The generative fill tool, powered by Adobe’s Firefly generative AI model, does a great job understanding both your text prompts and the context of the original image. Its generative AI can be used to expand, remove, replace, or edit any image type.
The Depth Blur filter lets you change the depth of any area of your photo, ensuring the focal point is sharp and interesting. For easy removal of pesky background elements, the new Remove Object Brush and Removal Tool quickly paint over anything you want to disappear. These work similarly to Generative Fill found in both Photoshop and Adobe Express.
“As we develop these advanced technologies, we take pride in the fact that we do so responsibly and always respect the rights of creators.” The web and mobile apps are available in beta mode from the 2025 update. Users with access to Photoshop Elements can access these beta versions. It cuts out subjects from backgrounds or backgrounds from subjects, and it allows you to merge the colors of two images to fit together as one. There are a lot of effects you can explore by combining your images together.
Their services can help you speed through tasks and prioritize other things. I think this is a fantastic new tool from Adobe that could save photographs that otherwise would’ve been discarded due to a distracting reflection. I can see the Reflection Removal tool being used in many instances, such as a photograph from the window of a house or airplane, where the reflection is so strong it detracts from the image’s primary focus. Perfect Portrait tools include skin smoothing, teeth whitening, the ability to open closed eyes, blemish removal, head straightening or aligning, and more. The results are subtle enough not to look over-edited, similar to the results you may achieve using AI portrait plugins in Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop Elements runs on a different pricing model reminiscent of old Adobe software where you owned the program outright.
Although the editing tools are basic, you can mask areas of your photo to choose how and where your animation appears. I was also surprised that each motion graphic comes complete with a small audio tune, for extra fun. You can create incredible photo manipulations, collages, animations, non-destructive edits, and AI content all using Photoshop’s layers. The Layers panel is a prominent part of a Photoshop workflow, and it’s easy to navigate and use. You can purchase the three-year license for Photoshop Elements for $99.99, and if you’re updating an existing license, you’ll pay only $79.99. You can also get the Adobe Elements Bundle consisting of both Photoshop and Premiere Elements—for video editing and image editing—for a total of $149.99 or discounted to $119.99 to upgrade an existing license.

Adobe is giving designers and photographers a new productivity boost with new features and generative AI updates for Illustrator and Photoshop. The biggest improvements for Illustrator come courtesy of Adobe’s latest Firefly Vector AI model, now in public beta. For video updates, Adobe Premiere Elements also has a handful of new features for 2025. This timeline is simplified for ease of use by anyone, whether you’re a seasoned video editor or a total novice. Your more used features will appear more prominently in the interface, and you can also apply locks to avoid accidental editing on the wrong layers of footage. Adobe’s one-time-purchase apps, Premiere Elements and Photoshop elements have some great new updates for 2025, released from October 1st 2024.
It is familiar, easy to navigate, and customizable for your preferences. With the addition of AI tools in recent times, Photoshop has some annoying pop-ups — like the Contextual Task Bar — but, overall, it has a nice, functional user interface. I typically don’t add a text prompt in the Contextual Task Bar when using Generative Expand; I like to see Photoshop’s invented results first. The Object Selection tool makes these precise selections in seconds and rarely makes a mistake with it. The Match Font tool in Photoshop is offered the same as Illustrator’s Retype tool, allowing you to select an area of text in your image, allowing the tool to find the closest match.
It works similarly to Photoshop’s Quick Selection tool, but as the selection appears, your preset recolors the selection. Many of these new tools are now available in the Beta version of Illustrator and Photoshop, including Generative Shape Fill, Text to Pattern, and Mockup in Illustrator. The other features are “generally available” in the Illustrator and Photoshop apps today. And if you need a Mockup you can do that right inside Illustrator, too, and the system can even automatically manipulate the image to show you how it will look on the selected product.
Adobe is aware of the issues and explains that, unlike non-AI tools, those powered by technology like Firefly, which is constantly being fine-tuned behind the scenes, are not continuously improving in every possible situation. While a one-step backward, two-step-forward situation is foreign to most photo editing applications, reality has changed in the age of AI. Canva is a photo editing app with a ton of features for all kinds of users. Adobe Photoshop is a photo editing software that is a part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. There are different versions of Photoshop that you can use with Photoshop being the main option and best for professionals.
The company has released Photoshop with generative AI (gen AI) features, available to anyone with a Creative Cloud subscription. Using the variations in your prompt will produce dozens of images, fast. You can change almost anything in the image, from individual elements to art styles or textures. I am constantly impressed by the visuals it produces, and you rarely get that “AI-tell” found in many other AI tools. I replicated my smartphone photos with AI, and Adobe Firefly 3 gave me the best results.
But, somehow, Adobe’s AI just isn’t coded to understand this and it repeatedly generates the weirdest stuff because of it. Yesterday, photographer Matthew Raifman shared a bizarre result Adobe’s Generative AI produced in Lightroom. The Generative Remove tool saw a selection of a reflection and decided to replace it with a Bitcoin logo. Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art.
Adobe Illustrator’s Recolor tool was one of the first AI tools introduced to the software through Adobe Firefly. This tool takes the guessing out of creating new color schemes or colorways for your vectors. Typically, you’d have to save your vector design, then open it in another program like Photoshop, and play around with layers, blending, and displacement maps for realistic results.
As part of today’s update, the application is receiving a kind of visual autocomplete tool called Generative Expand that can make an image larger by filling the empty space around it with new content. Further down the line, both Photoshop and Illustrator will integrate with another generative AI tool called Project Concept. Adobe says that the upcoming tool will enable designers to automatically apply the style of one image to another.

If you want to remove something from the image and match the empty spot to the background of the image, try using the AI-based Remove Tool instead of Generative Fill. What sets this feature apart from the Generative Fill is that the image is created from scratch. You aren’t working on an existing image as you did with Generative Fill or expanding on an existing image with Generative Expand.
Photoshop, the company’s flagship image editing application, is being updated as well. The most significant addition is an AI-powered feature called Distraction Removal. Photoshop is a powerful editing tool but it’s easy to get lost in all the different tools. With Firefly Text-to-Video, you can use text prompts, camera controls, and reference images to generate footage that fills gaps in your video timeline. Meanwhile, the AI-powered Generative Remove, introduced back in May as an early access feature, is now available to all the desktop, web and mobile flavours of Lightroom.
Additional innovations including Mockup (beta), Dimension Tool, Retype, Enhanced Pan and Zoom and Contextual Taskbar are also available today in the Illustrator app. Adobe Firefly generative AI tools riding shotgun can unlock limitless possibilities to boost productivity and creativity. Every content creator, solopreneur, side hustler, and freelance artist has hit roadblocks, maybe because of their skill level or perhaps a lack of time; it happens. When building a team isn’t possible, Adobe Firefly generative AI can help fill those gaps.
It’s time for a serious, co-ordinated, sustained photographer boycott of Adobe. I am the deputy editor of Amateur Photographer, working closely with the team to make the website and magazine as good as possible. I also keep my wedding-photography hand in by shooting a few ceremonies a year. I am particularly interested in how photography can help people express their creativity more effectively, or deal with mental health issues and other challenges.
According to Adobe, making slight edits to a video is another use case that the feature supports. Generative Extend can, for example, remove an unwanted camera movement that interrupts the flow of a clip. The feature generates video content with 720p or 1080p resolution at a rate of 24 frames per second. Adobe Inc. introduced a raft of new artificial intelligence features for creative professionals at its Adobe Max product today. The features are available in the latest versions of both desktop apps starting today. The final straw for me was when AI-generated images of the war in Gaza were found being sold on Adobe Stock.
